Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares resigns abruptly

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares (pic above, left) yesterday resigned with immediate effect, way earlier than his scheduled 2026 retirement.

The company has begun the process of appointing his replacement, “to be concluded within the first half of 2025”. Until then, a new interim executive committee, headed by chairman John Elkann, will be established.

“Stellantis’ success since its creation has been rooted in a perfect alignment between the reference shareholders, the Board and the CEO. However, in recent weeks different views have emerged which have resulted in the Board and the CEO coming to today’s decision,” said Stellantis’ senior independent director Henri de Castries.

Born in Lisbon in 1958, Tavares started out in Renault where he spent three decades, with a five-year stint at Nissan in the middle. He became CEO and chairman of the PSA Group in 2014, and when the company merged with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to form Stellantis in 2021, he became its first CEO.

“Our thanks go to Carlos for his years of dedicated service and the role he has played in the creation of Stellantis, in addition to the previous turnarounds of PSA and Opel, setting us on the path to becoming a global leader in our industry,” said Elkann.

Tavares’ resignation follows Stellantis’ declining North American sales, ballooning inventories and layoffs at some of its plants. In September, the company issued a profit warning on its 2024 results, including a forecast for a cash burn of up to 10 billion euros (RM47 billion).

Stellantis Announces They Will Be Forming Their Own Design Studio

Stellantis has announced the formation of the new Stellantis Design Studio, a creative agency that will provide design services for companies dealing with everything from transportation, to industrial, to manufacturing, and more.

The new studio looks to build on the current Peugeot Design Lab’s nine years of experience and over 120 collaborations, as well as expand its expertise to the rest of Stellantis’ brands, such as Maserati, Jeep, DS Automobiles, and Lancia. It will be led by Klaus Busse and Arnault Gournac, both of whom have already had experience serving significant roles within the company.

Klaus Busse currently oversees Maserati and Jeep Europe, and as of now, he will also be taking on the role of Head of Design at the new Stellantis Design Studio. His job will also entail leading the Studio’s expansion out to its respective brands. Regarding the founding of the Studio and his new position, he said: “The success story and expertise of Peugeot Design Lab is unrivaled. The extension of this know-how to all of our brands opens up incomparable perspectives.”

Arnault Gournac is the director of both the Peugeot Design Lab as well as Cycles Peugeot, and, along with Busse, has helped lead the new Design Studio in its global expansion. “Looking back on our brand portfolio, Stellantis designers have created some of the most exciting and visually appealing vehicles in automotive history,” said Gournac. “We plan to take that creative energy and offer our key competencies to our global external partners to help them take their brand and design projects to the next level. We will work to expand our reach by fostering new partnerships with global clients from all horizons.”

The Peugeot Design Lab will still operate alongside the Stellantis Design Studio, with a key role being to address Peugeot’s projects undertaken beyond the automotive sector. As time goes on, Stellantis Design Studio plans to progressively incorporate this knowledge and apply it to the rest of its brands.

All-New Citroen C5 Prototype Makes Spy Debut As Jacked-Up Fastback Of Sorts

For its first two generations, the Citroen C5 was pretty much your typical mid-size European offering, available as both a four-door sedan as well as a station wagon.

At the same time, it did manage to stand out in a crowd of Mondeos and Passats, thanks to sleek styling and quirky interior features. The second-gen C5 even came with a fixed center hub steering wheel, which took some getting used to.

Then there was the comfort, which the C5 held plenty of. If you’ve ever been inside a model with hydropneumatic suspension, you’ll definitely know what we mean. Let’s just say that the ride was very smooth.

So what’s the deal with this upcoming next-gen C5? It’s obviously neither a saloon nor a wagon, but more of a crossover with generous ground clearance, featuring a fastback rear end design.

There’s not much we can tell you with regards to design language, but it should mirror the all-new C4 as far as various body lines and perhaps even grille design. The overall shape is clearly different though, with the C5 being the larger vehicle.

Unfortunately, we don’t see a lot of similarities between this prototype and Citroen’s stunning CXperience concept, but the company’s product and strategy director, Laurence Hansen, did promise us “splendid” results, while adding that the upcoming C5 will be “a really important car” for them.

We’re also hoping to see a more conventional-looking interior, once those images do become available, while modern day safety and convenience features are a given.

As for what’s going on underneath, we suspect that the new C5 will ride on the PSA Group’s (sorry, Stellantis) EMP2 platform, the same as a Peugeot 508. The latter is powered by a wide range of gasoline and diesel units, including a hybrid option.

Citroen will unveil the all-new C5 either later this year or sometime in 2022, as a direct rival to the all-new Ford Mondeo, which is also morphing into a crossover.
